Cozy Striped Scarf for Beginners
Nothing feels better than wearing a warm, stylish scarf that you made with your own two hands! This Cozy Striped Scarf is the ultimate confidence-boosting project for new crocheters.
It uses just one main stitch: the tall, graceful double crochet. Because the stitch is tall, your scarf grows quickly, keeping you motivated from start to finish. The clean, modern color stripes add style without extra difficulty. You will practice switching colors smoothly and creating long, straight edges.

Finished Size
6 inches wide by 60 inches long (excluding fringe).
Materials
Worsted weight acrylic yarn (Medium weight, Size 4), 2 skeins in contrasting colors (Color A and Color B), about 150 yards each. Size 5.5 mm (US I-9) hook. Tapestry needle. Scissors. Measuring tape.
Gauge
12 double crochet stitches and 6 rows = 4 inches.
Abbreviations (US terms)
ch = chain, dc = double crochet, st(s) = stitch(es).
Pattern Notes
The turning chain 2 does not count as a stitch. Work the first double crochet of each row into the very first stitch at the base of the turning chain. To switch colors cleanly, work the final double crochet of a color block until two loops remain on the hook, then yarn over with the new color and pull through.
Instructions
- With Color A, chain 20 loosely.
- Row 1: Work 1 double crochet into the 3rd chain from the hook and into each remaining chain across. (18 dc)
- Row 2: Chain 2 and turn. Work 1 double crochet into the first stitch and into every stitch across. (18 dc)
- Rows 3-6: Repeat Row 2 with Color A. On the final stitch of Row 6, switch to Color B (pull new color through last two loops). Cut Color A, leaving a 6-inch tail.
- Rows 7-12: With Color B, repeat Row 2 for 6 rows. On the last stitch of Row 12, switch back to Color A. Cut Color B.
- Rows 13-90: Continue repeating Row 2, alternating 6 rows of Color A and 6 rows of Color B, until the scarf measures 60 inches. End with a 6-row block of Color A.
Optional Fringe
Cut 36 pieces of yarn (both colors), 10 inches long. Group 3 strands, fold in half to form a loop. Insert hook through a stitch on the short end, pull the loop halfway through, push the loose ends through the loop and pull tight. Space 6 bundles evenly across both short ends. Trim evenly.
Finishing
Fasten off. Weave each color-change tail into its matching color section so tails stay hidden. Trim excess.
Beginner Tips
- Do not pull color changes too tight or edges will pucker.
- Measure width after 4 rows (should be about 6 inches).
- Weave in ends every few color changes instead of all at the end.
